The New York Times best-selling author of Fat Chance explains the eight pathologies that underlie all chronic disease, documents how processed food has impacted them to ruin our health, economy, and environment over the past 50 years, and proposes an urgent manifesto and strategy to cure both us and the planet.

Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric neuroendocrinologist who has long been on the cutting edge of medicine and science, challenges our current healthcare paradigm which has gone off the rails under the influence of Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Government.

You can’t solve a problem if you don’t know what the problem is. One of Lustig’s singular gifts as a communicator is his ability to “connect the dots” for the general listener, in order to unpack the scientific data and concepts behind his arguments, as he tells the “real story of food” and “the story of real food”.

Metabolical weaves the interconnected strands of nutrition, health/disease, medicine, environment, and society into a completely new fabric by proving on a scientific basis a series of iconoclastic revelations, among them:

Medicine for chronic disease treats symptoms, not the disease itselfYou can diagnose your own biochemical profile Chronic diseases are not “druggable,” but they are “foodable” Processed food isn’t just toxic, it’s addictiveThe war between vegan and keto is a false war – the combatants are on the same sideBig Food, Big Pharma, and Big Government are on the other side

Making the case that food is the only lever we have to effect biochemical change to improve our health, Lustig explains what to eat based on two novel criteria: protect the liver, and feed the gut. He insists that if we do not fix our food and change the way we eat, we will continue to court chronic disease, bankrupt healthcare, and threaten the planet. But there is hope: this book explains what’s needed to fix all three.

Prescription for Individual and Public Health ~ Please Read This Book!
Very powerful and compelling, especially based on the clinical experience of Dr.Lustig, and his scientific training, he gives detailed biochemistry explanations to back up his views. Every member of U.S. Congress, FDA, USDA, NIH, HHS and EPA should be required to read this book. It should be required reading for certification and continuing education requirements for medical doctors. Highly recommend this book to everyone who wants to gain control over their health and help family members avoid long and short term preventable health issues.

Food is Food?! Nope…Food is Natural, NOT Processed!
This book is just what the doctor ordered. In it, you will learn a simple, yet factual, statement that will change your life: “Feed the gut and protect the liver!” 80 (or more) percent of the “food” you pull from your grocer’s shelf is not food at all. It is a biomass of chemicals designed to sit on the shelf for long periods of time to provide something that resembles calories to keep you alive. The FACT of the matter is…food either grows or it walks around on hooves eating things that grow OR swims in water eating things that grow in the water. The stuff on the shelf in your local grocery store is MOSTLY neither of those definitions. And MORE importantly, if you learn to eat real food, about 80 percent of those maladies that you encounter in life will go away. I know…I have reversed my Type II Diabetes while losing 20 pounds (so far). The joint pain I used to suffer is gone. The sinus problems I had (not able to breathe at night) are gone. The hacking cough is also gone! And my digestive discomfort (gas, reflux, and pain) is also gone! The western diet is poison…and it is generally killing the population while brainwashing them into the belief that they need a prescription to cure the ailment that is created by the food they eat. Is it that the pharmaceutical and food industry are working hand in hand to keep each other in business? Who knows!?What I do know…eating REAL, whole food solved my problems. Reading this book has reinforced my understanding of what it truly means to “eat to live!”

Science your family doctor should know, but doesn’t
Want to know why you are overweight and how to fix it? Here’s the science. This is not a diet book, but a look into the modern understanding of metabolism and metabolic dysfunction from the view of a leading researcher in the field. Dr. Lustig demonstrates his straightforward communication style, by bringing the complex world of human metabolism into focus for the layman with this excellent book. Understanding the concepts in this book make it much clearer on how to develop a healthy diet and achieve the desired benefits. This book will open your eyes to the dangers lurking in the supermarket aisles.

    Awesome book
I have periods where I eat healthy and periods where I eat frivolously. I find one of the best ways to get back on track is to read some of a book like this. It makes you really aware of the fact that what you blithely put in your mouth has real consequences. When you have constipation, heartburn, high blood pressure, dry eyes, arthritis, insomnia, etc. you think it’s a natural part of growing older. Think again.I used to work with a guy who ate grilled food and french fries every day. With a big sheepish smile, he would say, “I know this is bad for me.” But he didn’t really believe it in his gut. Spending time with this book makes you feel it. As they say, “You can pay the farmer or the pharmacy.”This is not a book promoting one diet or another. This is a thoughtful and passionate book from a doctor who spent decades seeing patients, reading research and synthesizing a coherent point of view that makes so much sense. In hindsight, it seems obvious. This book will change the world. There will be copycat books, but they won’t have the details or the smooth overarching framework from beginning to end. This is the book.

    You should read this book!
I’ve been learning more and more about how food impacts our bodies and brain, and this book is one of the best sources of credible information from an impressive doctor, Robert Lustig. I am so in awe of the research and thorough analysis gone into this book, and I highly recommend reading it. I’ve gifted it to many of my friends, including physicians, for whom I believe this book is a must read.I read and studied carefully the book, writing notes and doing research on my own along the way as I read more and more. I am not a doctor (I studied applied math) and was able to grasp the concepts of metabolic health and why we gain weight or have other issues based on the food we eat. This book has been an eye opener for me, and I wish I’d known this since the time I was a teenager (while I am 60 now, I have nonetheless changed my eating habits based on this book). Thank you, Dr Lustig, not only for all the work you put together to write this book, but for all your advocacy in spreading the word, and in going against the current. I wish the world had more people like yourself.

    Good… But lazy? Or cheap?
Good read and I’m well familiar with the subject and agree with much that is said. However, my problem with this book is there are zero footnotes to research anything the writer throws out there as a fact. I suppose if you’re the type of person that just shuts down and enjoys the force feeding of talking/data points with zero way to check them, this is the book for you to start out with. Before moving on to a better solution to grow your knowledge base with actual ways to research the studies and data.

Education to keep you healthy. Should be taught in middle / high school. Author is brilliant unlike the health care system in canada which is only good for emergencies…and today that is even questionable in Canada

Actually it is scary; doctors get sick people and send them out in 7 min with the next drug. Average American at 65 has 7 lifetime drugs. At 70 chronic illnesses manifest that kills them in 10 years, meanwhile they cost a fortune in medical bills, driving insurance costs through the roof. And nobody is against the system as it is; doctors earn more, food companies sell more, hospitals earn more, insurance loves higher premiums.Dr. Lusting explains in a beautifully readable book what is the biological mechanism in the body, what to do, especially what to eat, to stay healthy longer. And what kind of changes are needed in financing research and in policies regarding our food.Highly suggested, both great read and life changing! And make sure to watch a few of his lectures on Youtube.
